Homemade and Eggless Warm Apple Cinnamon Scones made with everyday pantry essentials is a great Fall Dessert or Snack.
Circa 2015 – Scones were on my to-do list for a long time, but somehow refined flour and sugar and butter put me off. I was looking around for a healthy recipe, when I chanced upon Harini’s recipe, which was a winner right from the word “go”.
I made a couple of modifications: altered the flour ratio and also needed a lil more butter and milk and added in a handful of chopped pecans. And voila ! We had a warm nice scone drizzled with some honey. Apple-cinnamon combo is a treat for those who love the spice.
My family love cinnamon in most baked treats and this is one of the few recipes that mom loved & kept talking about it a lot. We keep teasing her that having born around the Indian Independence , she has a lot of “British” culture left in her…Whatever your reason, this is one healthy scone that you cant afford to miss.
And if you have a sweet tooth, it’s a pleasing after-dinner snack too . Stays on the countertop for upto a day, and you can freeze- microwave for the next few days.
How else can you use up apples ?
Apples are so versatile, especially when used in season. From homemade applesauce , Apple Raita, Apple Soup,Apple- Ginger Smoothie, Garden fresh Apple Salad, Sugarfree Apple Streusel Muffins to Apple Crumble, Sugarfree Apple-Millet Phirni (Pudding) this is one fruit we love to gorge on.
Tips to make the perfect Apple – Cinnamon Pecan Scone
- Sift the flours well.
- If bread flour isn’t available, use plain flour through (the liquid proportions will vary)
- Make sure the apples are sweet (Red lady / Gala varieties work best). Green Apples will not work.
- Make sure the butter is chilled when you rub it in, else the crust will get soggy
- As its a moist mixture, work quickly and pat it directly on the lined baking sheet, else it gets messy
- For a nut-free option, you can skip the pecans or walnuts. If not, either of these nuts work beautifully.
- THe apples I used were quite sweet, so the sugar was just enough. Adjust sugar accordingly.
- As always, the bake times vary from oven to oven, Keep an eye after the 20th minute.
