History of Mango Mastani

Mango Mastani is a popular dessert beverage that originated in the Indian city of Pune, in the state of Maharashtra. It is a rich and indulgent drink that combines the flavors of mango, ice cream, and various toppings. The history of Mango Mastani can be traced back to the 19th century.

The name “Mastani” is believed to be inspired by the beautiful and legendary queen of the Maratha Empire, Mastani. She was the wife of Peshwa Bajirao I, a prominent figure in Indian history. Mastani was known for her elegance and her love for fine things, including food and beverages.

According to local legends, Mastani had a fondness for a special milkshake-like drink made with mangoes, milk, and ice cream. It is said that she enjoyed this drink during the scorching summer months and would often indulge in it to beat the heat.

Over time, the drink gained popularity and became a local specialty in Pune. It was named “Mango Mastani” in honor of Queen Mastani. The recipe has evolved over the years, with various additions and variations, but the core ingredients remain the same: ripe mangoes, milk, ice cream, and sugar.

Mango Mastani is typically prepared by blending ripe mangoes with milk and sugar to create a smooth and creamy base. The mixture is poured into a tall glass, and a scoop of ice cream is added on top. The drink is then garnished with various toppings such as chopped nuts, saffron strands, cherries, and sometimes even edible silver leaf (varakh). It is often served with a spoon and a straw to enjoy both the creamy milkshake-like consistency and the chunks of mango.

Today, Mango Mastani is widely available in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra, as well as in some Indian restaurants and dessert parlors around the world. It has become a popular summer treat, loved for its refreshing taste and decadent texture. The combination of sweet mangoes, creamy milkshake, and rich ice cream makes it a delightful indulgence for mango lovers.

The snippet into history of mango mastani is quite interesting. Looks so similar to falooda in the north. Before the last mangoes of the season vanish, I will try this at home. The layers seen through, look so inviting.
